Nats
The generic name for the spirits of indigenous Burmese religion and folk belief. They are spirits of the wind, air, rain, sky, earth, forest, rivers and streams, hills, etc., and also of the house and the cultivated fields. The Buddhist monks propitiate them as zealously as any nat-cult priest; there is a natsin (nat house or spirit shrine) in the shade of every pagoda, as well as one at the end of every village, where periodic ceremonies are performed. The nats serve as guardians of the house, village, tribe, and personal property. The eleven nat maidens who guard the eleven royal umbrellas in Mandalay are called nat-thami. They also protect boats and treasure. The Burmese have a specific list of Thirty-Seven Nats who, with two exceptions, are national heroes and heroines of five groups of pseudo-historical tales. There were originally thirty-three of them, but their number was expanded with four more in modern times. Their images can be found in the Shwe Zigon pagoda at Pagan.

Phoenix
Most beings spring from other individuals; but there is a certain kind which reproduces itself. The Assyrians call it the Phoenix. It does not live on fruit or flowers, but on frankincense and odoriferous gums. When it has lived five hundred years, it builds itself a nest in the branches of an oak, on the top of a palm tree. In this it collects cinnamon and spikenard, and myrrh, and of these materials builds a pile on which it deposits itself, and dying, breathes out its last breath amidst odors. From the body of the parent bird, a young Phoenix issues forth, destined to live as long a life as its predecessor. When this has grown up and gained sufficient strength, it lifts its nest from the tree (its own cradle and its parent's sepulcher), and carries it to the city of Heliopolis in Egypt, and deposits it in the temple of the sun.

Pig-Faced Ladies
The tale of the pig-faced lady was a folk story common in Europe during the middle ages. A newly-wed lady of rank and fashion (so the tale goes) annoyed by the pleas of a beggar-woman and her child, exclaimed: "Take away your nasty pig, I shall not give you anything!" to which the beggar-woman cursed her, saying: "May your own child, when it is born, be more of a pig than mine!" And so the lady gave birth to a lovely little daughter afflicted with the face of a pig. This pig-baby thrived and grew, and became a pig-girl and then a pig-woman . . . a lovely dainty lady right up to the neck, you would say, but there her beauties ended; and her manners were in every respect, alas, those of a pig at the trough. No servant would remain in her parents' employ, no fortune-hunter was desperate enough to wed the creature; at last her unhappy family founded a hospital, whose trustees were bound to keep and cherish the pig-faced damsel, and there the poor thing spent the rest of her days. Pig-faced women were often exhibited by showmen: these were bears, their heads carefully shaven, roped upright in chairs like women, and adorned with shawls and gowns, hats and ringlets and flowers.

These are the West Country fairies belonging to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. Usually no larger than a human hand, a pixie is human-like with red hair and green eyes. They have upturned noses and malicious smiles. They usually wear tight fitting green clothes. Pixies have the ability to change their size at will. They are tricksters who like to lead humans astray. However, they can be foiled if a man wears his coat inside out. Their origin is not known, but it has been said that the pixies were the first to welcome the færies when they arrived in England. Then, fearing that they would be taken over, the pixies waged war on the færies. Farmers embrace the presence of pixies and do certain things to please them, and therefore keep them on the farm. At night, farmers will leave a bucket of water out so mother pixies can wash their babies, they'll leave milk out for them to drink and they'll sweep the hearth so that the pixies have a clean place to dance. Pixies are usually found in the counties of Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall. There are varying traditions about the size, appearance, and origin of the Pixies, but all accounts agree about their being dressed in green and about their habit of misleading travelers.§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§¤§

Legends and stories form all over the world have contained stories of a fabulous huge bird, capable of carrying groups of children, up to three elephants and even Sinbad himself. Our knowledge of the roc (sometimes spelled Rukh) comes from Arabia and China, through the Arabian Nights and the Travels of Marco Polo. The bird, as it appears in Arabian Nights, is described by Sinbad as, "A bird of enormous size, bulky body and wide wings, flying in the air; and it was this that concealed the body of the sun and veiled it from the sun." In the account of Marko Polo the wingspan of the roc was 16 yards and the feathers 8 yards. The bird is usually described as being white. The egg of the roc is said to be over 50 yards in circumference. When Sinbad first saw the egg of the roc, he mistook it for a large domed building. There are four stories about the roc in the Arabian Nights, two involving Abd al-Rahman, and two involving Sinbad. In one story involving Sinbad, the roc unknowingly carries Sinbad to safety after a shipwreck. In the other, and in one of the Abd al-Rahman stories rocs destroy ships by dropping boulders on them. Both of these occurrences were in retaliation for killing a roc chick.

If a human can capture this skin, the Selkie can be forced to become a fine, if wistful, wife. However, should she ever find her skin she immediately returns to the sea, leaving the husband to pine and die. The males raise storms and upturn boats to avenge the indiscriminate slaughter of seals.

On the morning of November 1 1922, visitors to the beach at Margate, South Africa, were treated to an amazing spectacle out at sea: two whales could be clearly observed engaging in battle with a bizarre sea monster with snowy-white fur and a huge elephantine trunk. As the titanic battle progressed, the monster seemed to weaken, and three hours later it was dead.During the evening it's lifeless body was washed ashore and proved to be truly colossal, measuring just over 14 metres(47 feet) in length, and including a 3 metre (10 foot) tail.Apart from it's luxuriant 20-cm (8-inch) long fur, however, the most remarkable feature abou this creature is that it did not possess a distinct head; instead, it bore only the trunk-like appendage, 1.5 meters (5 feet) long, that had been visible during it's fatal encounter with the whales. This creature was dubbed "Trunko".

Unicorn
The first mention of the Unicorn came from Ctesias in 389 BC. He said that the beast was a wild ass that was the same size, or bigger than a horse. They had white bodies, dark red heads and dark blue eyes, with the tell-tale horn on it's head measuring about a foot and a half. Pliny gave the most descriptive early account. He records it as "a very ferocious beast, similar in the rest of it's body to a horse, with the head of a deer, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a boar, a deep, bellowing voice, and single black horn, two cubits in length, standing out in the middle of its forehead." It is almost impossible to hunt; the only method seems to be to take advantage of the unicorn's great love of purity and innocence. If a young virgin is placed in the unicorn's way it will approach with reverence, lie down beside her, lay its head down in her lap, and fall asleep. The hunters can then capture the beast. In the middle ages the unicorn was a symbol of power, magnificence and purity. In ancient China it was the badge of kingship.

The veshtitze would join together to form covens. The members of a coven flock together in the branches of some tree at midnight on certain nights to hold a meeting while they snack upon what they had gathered earlier in the dark. Since it was a common Eastern European belief that witches in general became undead vampires after their death, it seems likely that the natural death of a Veshtitza does not end her drinking habit.

This Polish vampire was a person who was born with a caul (membrane cap) on his head at the time of birth who would later become a vampyre. The cap was removed, dried, ground up, and fed to the person on their seventh birthday to prevent them from becoming a Vjesci. A Vjesci looked perfectly human, was restless, easily excitable, and had a ruddy complexion. At the time of their "death" the Vjesci would renounce God. The Vjesci would never actually die and would rise at midnight after the burial. The Vjesci would eat at the burial clothing and bits of his flesh. He would then leave the grave and attack a family member by sucking out all their blood. Unsatisfied, he would move on to neighbors. To be rid of the Vjesci the people of the town would receive a Eucharist wafer. They would then place a little earth on the coffin to prevent it from returning there. They would place a crucifix or coin in the mouth of the Vjesci and wrap it in a net (the Vjesci was only allowed to untie one knot of the net per year and could not rise until all the knots were untied). The body would be placed face down, so that when the vampyre awoke, it would dig deeper into the earth.

Water Nymphs were especially lustful of handsome young men, whom they dragged down into the depths of ponds and lakes and held captive there as their lovers (though by some accounts the humans ran out of breath and drowned). When a youth of comely appearance leaned over the water to drink, or to admire his reflection, he always took the risk of calling himself to the attention of some Water Nymph who would rise up out of the waters and drag him down; or she might appear in the middle of the body of water, perhaps taking a seat on some large lily pad, and lure him by her beauty to his fate. Some said that youths who vainly admired their own reflections and so attracted the attention of amorous Water Nymphs got no worse than they deserved.

Wendigo
A mythological creature in the lore of the northeastern tribes of Algonquian Indians that is oddly seemed to be a cross between a Sasquatch and a werewolf; but it should not be mistaken for a werewolf. It is said to be a human initially and that he was transformed into a fearsome, cannibalistic, beast after being forced by circumstances beyond his control causing him to regress to eating human flesh in an effort to survive the harsh conditions of the wilderness. There are many tales about hunters who are lost in the bush without food or provisions for a long time and had to regress into cannibalistic predators that prey on fellow human beings. The taste of human blood and flesh caused them to be cursed by the Manitou, spirits of the wild, and are then said to transform these former hunters into Wendigos, a creature that preys on unwary fellow human beings. Many of those who regress into animalistic behavior have found it difficult to revert to normal human behavior, exhibiting cannibalistic tendencies even after months of therapy. It is possible that such incidences, especially during the pre-colonial times when psychological therapy was non-existent, may have given rise to the myth of the mysterious transformation of normal human beings into Wendigos. Among the Ojibwa tribe, the term wendigo is used to refer to an Ogre or a sort of a hulkish troll-like creature which has often been used toscare children for misbehaving. To the Ojibwa, the wendigo is not necessarily cannibalistic. For them, the wendigo is just one of the evil spirits that live in the depths of the wilderness.

These creatures come in many shapes and forms. In fact, were-creatures may be a whole group of creatures, not just a single one. Tales tell of them as demonic, or completely animalistic, or normal. Theirs is a lot of variation in this curse, if it is even a curse. Some have complete control over the degree of their form. Others are governed by cycles of nature; usually tied to the movement of the sun or the moon. Some have a morphed form, some do not.

In the forests and plains of Siberia and China and in the mountains of the Himalayas, live two races of mysterious hairy wild people. Called "Alma" by the Chinese and Soviets and "Yeti" by the Nepalese and Tibetans, these creatures average five feet in height and are covered from head to toe by a coarse hair -- silver and white in the mountainous regions, and orange and brown in the forests. These creatures are seen only at random, and the evidence for their existence is mostly hair samples, footprints, and vague sightings. Scientists believe the Alma and Yeti are surviving ancestors of our own species; but until specimens are caught, living or dead, final proof is missing.

Yowie
Yet another cousin of the Bigfoot, this time from down under. Reports of a Sasquatch like creature are also numerous throughout Australia, ever since European settlers first entered the continent. Before the coming of the settlers, Yowie sightings were made by the Aborigines and remembered in their folklore. An earlier name for the creature was 'Yahoo', which according to some accounts was an aborigine term meaning "devil", "devil-devil" or "evil spirit." More likely, the indirect basis for the name was Jonathan Swift, whose Gulliver's Travels book (1726) includes a subhuman race named the Yahoos. Learning of the aborigines' fearful accounts of this malevolent beast, nineteenth-century European settlers in all probability applied the name Yahoo to the Australian creature themselves. The term "Yowie" stared to be used in the 1970's, apparently because of the aborigine word 'Youree', or 'Yowrie', apparently the legitimate native term for the hairy man-monster. One can easily assume the Australian accent could distort "Youree" into "Yowie."
